On July 25, 2018, CHW had the honor of walking through the NC Mutual Building near downtown Durham, which is undergoing construction to update the interiors and to build co-working spaces within the Brutalist building. CHW Director Bobby Allen, Senior Fellow Jerry Bolas, Graduate Research Fellow Ina Dixon, and Project Coordinator Nicole Coscolluela met with Peter Cvelich of the Development Finance Initiative (DFI) and Chaunesti Webb of Northwestern University to tour the to-be revamped lower floors and lobby and to explore ways in which NC Mutual Life’s history can be highlighted in public spaces. NC Mutual played a significant role in Durham’s rich black history and black business tradition.
