The CHW is pleased to announce that we will be adding a one-year, full-time staff position to coordinate the next phase of our work in Rocky Mount.

The UNC-Chapel Hill Community Histories Workshop ( ) announces a one-year position in public history and public humanities to lead Rocky Mount Mills: From Adaptive Reuse to Public Engagement, a community history and archiving project funded through a grant from the National Historic Publications and Records Commission of the National Archives and Records Administration.

Responsibilities of the Social Research Specialist/Project Coordinator include but are not necessarily limited to:

*support project Principal Investigator, Professor Robert Allen
*serve as project manager and team leader for the project, coordinating effort by all participants and contributing units
*coordinate project administration with the staff of the UNC Center for Urban and Regional Studies
*coordinate the work of the project’s graduate fellow
*working with the African American genealogy specialist in the SHC, support field testing of software *platform options for slave-era genealogy associated with Rocky Mount Mills
*working with Professor Allen, coordinate student projects in the fall term ’17 offering of “Documenting Communities” and develop avenues for the expression of this work online and onsite
*ensure effective documentation and evaluation of all facets of the project
*contribute to the creation of a special community history/archiving configuration of Prospect
*working with the project team, CHW general manager, and OASIS technologists, create and maintain Digital Rocky Mount
*working with Professor Allen, research and write a primary-source based narrative history of the Rocky Mount Mills site and the wider community
*assist Professor Allen in the compilation of a white paper on adaptive reuse as a catalyst for community history and archiving
*working with the staff of Carolina K-12, curate “Closing Stories” oral history interviews around the mill’s last three decades, for use in 8th grade North Carolina history learning unit
*organize an adaptive reuse/community history charrette in summer of 2018
*coordinate onsite deployment of Digital Rocky Mount with Capitol Broadcasting and project architect
*organize a spring 2018 “history harvest” in Rocky Mount to field test Prospect community history configuration
*develop and implement a communications plan for the project

This position will be based on the UNC Chapel Hill campus, but will require regular day trips to Rocky Mount, N.C. The position reports to Professor Robert Allen, project PI.

Education and Experience
Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s degree in related field of study and one year of related training or experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Education/Qualifications :
Graduate level training (MA or above) in a field relevant to the project or equivalent experience in public history, American Studies, public humanities, information/library science, and/or digital humanities.  Familiarity/experience with public-facing digital humanities platforms and tools (Omeka, Neatline, HistoryPin, Palladio, Curatescape, etc.); formal training in digital humanities at the level of the graduate certificate or equivalent; experience with and commitment to collaborative, project-based, community-centered practice; project management experience and familiarity with project management tools (Trello, Basecamp, etc.); familiarity/experience with archival work processes.
